WORLD TOBACCO GROWERS DAY (29th October)
NO REPLACEMENT TO TOBACCO SAYS TOBACCO GROWERS IN MALAWI
Tobacco growers in Malawi joined the rest of the tobacco growing countries in the world in commemorating this year’s first ever World Tobacco Growers Day which fell on 29th October 2012. In Malawi this day was commemorated under the theme “Tobacco Production – The Economic LifeLine of Malawi’’. The International Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA) came up with this idea to enable all tobacco growing countries to express their concern over World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) which intends to ban tobacco production by 2025.
Tobacco Growers expressed fear that, this will negatively impact on their livelihoods more especially if the contentious Articles 17 and 18 of the FCTC get implemeted in their current form. Statistics which Tobacco Association Of Malawi has indicates that close to 5 million Malawians will be affected if this is implemented wholesome. Farmers therefore presented their concerns in a Petition to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Professor Peter Mwanza at a colouful ceremony held at Nankhaka Ground. The Minister will had over the Petition to Her Execellency, The State President of the Republic of Malawi, Mrs Joyce Banda.
