WORLD TOBACCO GROWERS DAY- 2017

("Together Towards Defined and Sustainable Production for Better

Markets")

The World celebrates the 2017 World Tobacco Growers Day on

28th October, 2017. On this day we commemorate the important

economic contribution from tobacco to the economies of many

countries in the world. The day was set aside by the International

Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA), whose Secretariat is in

Lisbon, Portugal.

Tobacco farmers in Malawi and stakeholders along the tobacco

value chain, join the International Community in commemorating

this year's event under the theme: "Together Towards Defined

and Sustainable Production for Better Markets".

The economic importance of tobacco in all producing countries

cannot be overemphasized. In Malawi it remains a strategic crop.

It employs 12% of the country's labour force, contributes around

13% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), has about 25% share in

the Tax base and contributes around 50% of the foreign exchange

earnings. This is indeed the green gold of Malawi.

In Malawi the celebration will take place on Saturday, 28th

October, 2017, at Mzuzu Stadium starting from 9 am. Activities

of the day include a carnival of vehicles from Mzuzu University

to the Stadium, exhibitions of stakeholders' products, traditional

dances, comedy, and a football match between Mzuni and

Moyale Barracks.

All tobacco growers, stakeholders and the general public are

invited to attend.
