WORLD TOBACCO GROWERS DAY- 2017

The World celebrates the 2017 World Tobacco Growers Day on
28th October, 2017. On this day we commemorate the important
economic contribution from tobacco to the economies of many
countries in the world. The day was set aside by the International
Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA), whose Secretariat is in
Tobacco farmers in Malawi and stakeholders along the tobacco
value chain, join the International Community in commemorating
this year's event under the theme: "Together Towards Defined
and Sustainable Production for Better Markets".
The economic importance of tobacco in all producing countries
cannot be overemphasized. In Malawi it remains a strategic crop.
It employs 12% of the country's labour force, contributes around
13% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), has about 25% share in
the Tax base and contributes around 50% of the foreign exchange
earnings. This is indeed the green gold of Malawi.
In Malawi the celebration will take place on Saturday, 28th
October, 2017, at Mzuzu Stadium starting from 9 am. Activities
of the day include a carnival of vehicles from Mzuzu University
to the Stadium, exhibitions of stakeholders' products, traditional
dances, comedy, and a football match between Mzuni and
All tobacco growers, stakeholders and the general public are
invited to attend.
